Asmat
Tribe maybe is the most well known tribe in Papua (called Irian Jaya before). For the Asmat Tribe,
woodcarving was connected with the spirit world. Because of that, the carving
can’t only just be the object especially aesthetic. Much of the original art
from Asmat is symbolic of warfare, headhunting, and warrior-ancestor
veneration.
For centuries, the Asmat were preoccupied
with necessity of appeasing ancestor spirits, producing a wealth of superbly
designed shields, canoes, scluptured figures, and drums.

And they become famous not only through their head-hunting practices in the past, but also because of their unique ideas and wonderful designs in woodcarving.To reach and get the carving, we must fly to theTimika (from Bali) and then by a smaller plane to the Ewer, and from Ewer we need a boat to reach Agats, the site of the festival.
Asmat
festival is dedicated for development of art and culture for the benefit of the
locals. Being the main attraction is the carving and attraction performed by
several village surrounding the area of Agats. The best statue will be placed
at Asmat Museum in Agats, and remaining of them are sold through the auction on
the festival site.

Before all of this
families tribe lived together in house, which the long house until 28 meters
called Yeus. Yeus still used, but not only for men, like clubhouse where the
human unmarried sleep. Upriver Asmat Tribe still live in longhouse, some even built
the houses in treetops.

live on sago, their staple, as mussels, snails, and fat insect larvae collected
from decaying stumps of sago palms. This food they eaten with throbbing of
drums an ritual dance (the larvae sometimes can keep good until two weeks).

In the rivers, there are shirmp, fish, lobster, crab,
fresh water dolphin, sea snake and crocodiles. And in the banks of the river
there are lizards which grow longer tha the komodo dargon. The Asmat also
gather the products of forest such as rattan, catch fish and shrimp in large
hoop nets.
Cannibalism is a phenomenon
which occurs eat eating of the same creatures, such as a tigers eat tigers, and
humans eat humans. This phenomenon is called cannibalism anthropophagus that
the Greek anthropos meaning human and
phagein mean eating.
That the most frightening from this tribe is the way the
Asmat used to kill them enemies. When the enemies is killed, his body was taken
to the village. And then they cut and distributed to all residents to eat
together. They sang the death songs and cut off the head. They wrapped the brain in sago
leaves are roasted and eaten.
